Writer: Gail Simone * Artist: Walter Geovani
A new arc begins that is as clever as its protagonist. Much humor and irony is had as Sonja hunts for… a master Chef?
Writer: Charles Soule * Artist: Javiar Pulido
Soule shows off his usual flair for characterization, dialog and humor. Plus, being a lawyer himself, the legalese rings authentic. Art: Vincete’s colors pop, and smartly suit each setting. Javiar Pulido has a silver age, cartoonish style. He excels with character pieces like this, has pitch perfect comedic timing and I like his expressions.
Writer: Kurtiz J. Wiebe * Artist: Roc Upchurch
A lot happens in this issue, but it never feels rushed or over stuffed. Key plot points are touched upon, there's a bloody battle, some heart, humor and strong character work. And a last page reveal that had me wanting more.
Writer: Cullen Bunn * Artist: A. C. Zamudio
Bunn's new horror series concerns a family on a struggling farm and the new hired hand who has a taint of darkness to him. The dialog is impressively literary and the art establishes the look and tone and brings you right into the story and these peoples lives.
Writer: Tony Bedard * Artist: Yildiray Cinar
Lobo pushes the wrong buttons and Kara’s explosion of violence and rage is quite scary. This was a rip-roaring action issue, which only gives us a breather in scenes with Siobhan, whose concern for her friend leads her smack dab in the middle of trouble.
Writers: Johnathan Luna & Sarah Vaughn * Artist: Johnathan Luna
This is a comic filled with scenes of people sitting around having discussions. Sounds like a bore, but when the ideas are about the nature of sentience, and there’s the tint of danger and law breaking involved in this talk… it’s actually quite scintillating.
Writer: Jason Aaron * Artist: Esad Ribic
Ribic is back and the book soars under his skilled hand! As I poured through those opening pages I could feel my pulse race, Esad is that epic an artist. Jason Aaron offers up a sobering environmental tale. And as with the Gorr saga, I like how he has our Thunder God ponder questions that are as formidable as any physical foe he has faced.
Writer: Jeff Parker * Artist: David Williams
The Otto Preminger looking Mr. Freeze returns! Visually it’s a treat. Williams & Shannon did some amazing work. There are clever movements (the dynamic duo skiing through Gotham) and it's filled with small, wonderful details (from snowfall, to a spark in Mr. Freeze's eye). And Jeff Parker's script is a scream. I bust a gut laughing when a woman shows concern that Robin’s going to catch his death of cold with those legs of his exposed.
Writer: Greg Rucka * Artist: Michael Lark
With “The Lift”, Rucka and Lark branch out beyond the Family Carlyle to show us how the less privileged live in this world of theirs. That doesn’t mean Forever is slighted. We get further peaks into her past and watch her investigate a theft, which might have ties to what happened at the start of issue 1. This is somber, painful stuff, but skillfully depicted in both story and art.
Writer: G. Willow Wilson * Artist: Adrian Alphona
I like the diversity, I also like that Kamala’s a typical teenager: Enthusiastic, at times petulant. She geeks-out like a fangirl over superheroes, and is curious about things not allowed her. Wilson & Alphona bring warmth and humor and energy to the book. It’s a solid character piece, the layouts are intelligently designed, there’s good movement in the figures, and though expressions are sometimes exaggerated (as when the father loses his temper at the dinner table) overall they convey emotions nicely.
2. The Trial of Jean Gray: All-New X-Men #23 & Guardians of the Galaxy #12 (Marvel)
Writer: Brian Bendis * Artists: Suart Immonen & Sara PichelliSo far so good. This crossover has been a winner, full of heart and intrigue, strong characterization, humor and at least one surprising reunion. The art from Immonen and Pichelli has been standout, especially in conveying emotion.
Writer: Brian Azzarello * Artist: Cliff Chiang
Azzarello and Chiang drive the plot at a breakneck speeds and in the process put the book back at the #1 spot for the month. This is an action packed thriller as Diana and her group hunt for Zola, while Cassandra conducts her own hunt and Apollo throws down with First Born.
Hon Mentions: Action Comics #28 (DC), Harley Quinn #3 (DC), Go-Getters (Monkeybrain), Red/Green Lanterns Flipbook #28 (DC), Winter Soldier #1 (Marvel), The Royals: Masters of War #1 (Vertigo)
